He studied music at the Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina, before going to Philadelphia in 1937. Shortly thereafter he moved to New York where he played in the big bands of Teddy Hill and Cab Calloway before joining the band of Billy Eckstine, where he met Charlie Parker. They would join forces to become the founding fathers of what became known as Be-Bop. The Music heard here is a perfect example of that post-war be-bop movement. Along with Dizzy and Bird, we also hear from other giants of the era including Milt Jackson, Sonny Stitt, Bud Powell, Al McKibbon, Roy Haynes, and a very young Sarah Vaughan.
